The City of Biwabik recently welcomed Michael Schultz as its new city administrator. We checked in with Michael to learn about the transition and what’s up ahead. Here’s our Q&A:
Congratulations on the new position! How’s it going so far?
Thank you! It’s been an exciting and busy start since I began in early November. The transition and first few months have gone smoothly, thanks to the incredibly supportive city council, advisory boards, staff, and community members.
There’s a lot happening in Biwabik, and every project or situation comes with its own history and context, most of which I have been learning over the last few months. While challenges exist, I’m confident that with the right team and a shared commitment to the future, we’ll continue moving in a positive direction.
Overall, things are going well, and I am truly excited to be here in Biwabik!
Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to this role?
Most recently, I served as the clerk/treasurer for the City of Tower for the last four years, where I handled a wide range of administrative, financial, and operational responsibilities. That experience deepened my passion for local government and community service in the Iron Range region.
When the city administrator position opened up in Biwabik, it felt like a natural next step to take on broader leadership responsibilities in a vibrant and energetic community with great potential. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to continue the momentum in Biwabik.
I grew up in Britt and attended Virginia High School and Mesabi Community College through post-secondary enrollment, followed by earning my bachelor of political science degree from St. John’s University. After college, I worked in the Twin Cities in the private sector, advancing into management roles.
My wife, who is also originally from the Iron Range and grew up in Gilbert, and I decided to return to the Iron Range area to raise our family and be closer to our extended families. I took a position with the Minnesota Department of Revenue in Ely and worked there the three preceding years before becoming clerk/treasurer in Tower.
I’m grateful for the path that led me here and excited to continue building on that experience in Biwabik.
What are you looking forward to the most with this work in the weeks and months ahead?
I’m enthusiastic about several initiatives and projects happening in Biwabik.
The city is in the process of replacing water meters citywide, and upcoming HVAC upgrades at City Hall and the Pavilion will improve efficiency and reliability. Progress is continuing on the Public Safety Facility, and the West Annex project is being re-evaluated and refined. In addition, Biwabik has joined the Age-Friendly Community initiative, which will help ensure the city continues to be welcoming and accessible for residents of all ages. We are also exploring several housing initiatives at various stages of development, and the newly established Economic Development Authority is beginning its work to support growth and investment in the community.
I have had the pleasure to meet many members of the community, and I look forward to meeting and connecting with more people in the coming weeks and months. Biwabik has tremendous potential and I look forward to being a part of its continued progress.
